Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services--water, gas, electricity or telephones--were cut off? Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone right away. Therefore, the best way to make your family and your home safer is to be prepared before disaster strikes.
One of the best ways to prepare is to create a Family Disaster Plan and a Family Disaster Supplies Kit. The kit should include the following:
- Battery Operated Radio
- Flashlight
- Extra Batteries
- Clean, Drinkable Water
- Food (non-perishables)
- First Aid Kit (1 for your home, and 1 for every car)
- Prescription & Non-prescription Drugs
- Tools & Other Supplies (Utility knife, paper cups, hammer, matches, etc.)
- Sanitation Supplies (paper towels, toilet paper, chlorine bleach, etc.)
- Clothing & Bedding
- Necessities for baby
- Necessities for pets
- Important Family Documents
- Entertainment & Games
For your Family Disaster Plan you should decide where to go when an disaster strikes (for tornadoes someplace safe like a basement, for fires a meeting place away from the building, etc). These plans should be updated yearly and posted in places of employment and public areas. You also should decide on a Communication Plan, or where you can meet/ who you can contact if you are separated during the disaster.
